Chlorine Handing and Disinfection Processes @ Cranbrook, BC

Description:

This 4.5 day course is designed for the operators who are or will be responsible for the operations of the disinfection process or processes. This hands-on and theoretical study course will provide the operator with a complete understanding, and the ability to apply and analyze the purpose, procedures, mathematical equations, operation and maintenance of the disinfection processes (existing, new or up and coming) for water and wastewater systems through classroom study and hands-on labs.

Course topics are:

  1. Disinfection Basics   – Re-enforce the principles of disinfection
  2. Chlorine – Understand the principles, application and safety aspects of chlorine gas
  3. Chlorine Compounds – Identify and understand the concepts and applications for chlorine compound
  4. Ultra Violet – Understand the principles, application and safety aspects of ultraviolet
  5. Ozonation – Discuss the principles, application and safety aspects of Ozonation
  6. Additional Processes – Discuss and identify the other processes that are utilized for disinfection

Course Overview

This one-day course addresses best practices for maintenance, cleaning, safety, and chlorination of reservoirs.

You should take this course if you are:

  • A water system operator or administrator responsible for the operation and maintenance of reservoirs, tanks, or other distribution system storage facilities.
  • A certified operator in water treatment, water distribution, or small water systems interested in earning continuing education unit (CEU) credits.

You will be asked to complete a knowledge assessment when you register to give the course facilitator an understanding of your acquired knowledge to date.

Learning Objectives

After completing the Reservoir Maintenance and Cleaning course, you will be able to:

  • Understand distribution system storage, maintenance, inspection, and cleaning methods.
  • Recognize safety concerns involved with operating or maintaining a reservoir, including confined space entry.

This 4.5 day course will review all aspects of wastewater treatment operations from preliminary treatment through to return of effluent to the environment. The guiding documents in preparing the course are the ABC WWT plant operator Need-to-Know (NTK) criteria, the 2012 ABC standardized exam NTK criteria and the applicable Acts and Regulations of British Columbia.

This intermediate course continues the learning for operators on key concepts in the field of wastewater collection and broadens an operator’s knowledge of system fundamentals.

You should take this course if you are:

  • Wanting to understand more, or move into a level 2 operator role.
  • In a role that requires an in-depth understanding of how wastewater collection works, or maintaining a facility classified as a wastewater collection 2 (WWC2) facility.
  • An operator who wishes to prepare for level 2 EOCP certification, or that wants to earn CEU credits that can be applied to water or wastewater systems continuing education requirements.

Learning Objectives

Upon completing Wastewater Collection 2, you will be able to:

  • Further understand wastewater collection systems and increase your understanding of pipeline construction, pumps, survey, and layout.
  • Understand the maintenance and restoration of the wastewater collection system including pipeline cleaning and system inspection and testing.
  • Understand engineering principles such as design periods, flow measurements and flow variations.
  • Perform certain security, safety and administrative procedures including electrical safety, how to handle sewer gases, odour control, etc.

This course provides an introduction to water distribution practices and focuses on the practical aspects of construction, operation and maintenance of water distribution.

You should take this course if you are:

  • Wanting to understand more, or entering into a role where you will be dealing with water distribution.
  • In a role that requires an understanding of how water distribution systems work, or maintaining a facility classified as a water distribution (WD1) facility.
  • An operator who wishes to prepare for level 1 EOCP certification, or that wants to earn CEU credits that can be applied to water or wastewater systems continuing education requirements.

Learning Objectives

Upon completing Water Distribution 1, you will be able to:

  • Understand and apply water distribution system information/components including federal, provincial and local regulations, water quality, water sources, water storage, valves, hydrants and meters, plan reading, water main construction, and cross connection control.
  • Monitor, evaluate and adjust disinfection in water distribution systems including disinfection through chlorination, hypochlorination, ultraviolet radiation, ozone, chlorine dioxide, etc., sampling requirements and other monitoring.
  • Understand the functions of a variety of equipment including hydrants, meters, pipes, service connections, taps, valves, pumps, and water mains.
  • Understand the maintenance of water mains including types of maintenance and pumps and controls.
  • Understand how to perform certain security, safety and administrative procedures including understanding work site safety, setting up a safety program, electrical safety, chemical safety, confined space entry and safety in excavation, shoring and trenching, etc.
