Source Water Protection
Course Overview
This one-day course provides the foundation needed to develop a source water protection plan for your water supply system.
You should take this course if you:
- Are a small water system owner (including trustees and councilors), operator, water user, or community member interested in protecting the sources of your water supply system.
- Want to earn CEU credits that can be applied to water or wastewater systems continuing education requirements.
The course is also applicable to larger water supply system owners, operators and users.
You will be asked to complete a knowledge assessment when you register to give the course facilitator an understanding of your acquired knowledge to date.
Learning Objectives
After completing the Source Water Protection course, you will be able to:
- Create a source water protection plan, including understanding how to create a community planning team, build community support, delineate the source protection area, evaluate assessment tools, and develop and implement an action plan, including emergency response planning.
- Understand how to use the various assessment tools, including the Source to Tap screening tools, Water Assessment Guide, and Well Protection Toolkit.
- Identify and assess potential contaminants and risks that can affect source water quality, including pathogens (bacteria, viruses and protozoa), nitrates, volatile organic chemicals (VOCs), inorganic chemicals, and endocrine disruptors.

This 1 day program is designed for water utility operators, contractors who install and work with water mains. This session considers dealing with a water main leak, we review procedures and repair materials and installation techniques, agenda items include:

- Post repair procedures

Small Wastewater Systems
Course Overview
This two-day course introduces students to the fundamentals of small wastewater system operations and what is needed to comply with legislation to protect public health, safety and the environment.
You should take this course if you:
- Operate and maintain wastewater systems that serve a population of less than 500.
- Are preparing to write the EOCP certification exam for small wastewater systems.
Learning Objectives
After completing the Small Wastewater Systems course, you will be able to:
- Understand the regulations that govern wastewater collection, treatment and discharge, and how to monitor system performance to protect public health and the environment.
- Understand the characteristics of wastewater, and how this impacts collection and treatment systems.
- Understand how wastewater collection systems are designed, built, operated, maintained, and repaired. You will be familiar with the equipment, materials, methods, and safety considerations.
- Understand wastewater treatment methods, including the design, operation and maintenance of septic systems, and mechanical systems including preliminary, primary and secondary treatment.
- Understand and apply safe workplace practices, including confined space entry, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System, lock out / tag out procedures.

- Interested in management skills, but not certain if you would like to take the Management Skills Certification Program (MSCP)
- A certified operator interested in earning continuing education unit (CEU) credits

This is a 5 day course offers an advanced level operator the opportunity to prepare for certification in Water Distribution Level III / IV, focusing on the practical aspects of advanced plant operations. Recommended for operators who maintain a facility classified as a WD III or IV.

This is a 5 day introductory course providing a basic knowledge of water treatment processes focusing on the practical aspects of plant operations. Recommended for operators who maintain a facility classified as a WT I.

The purpose of this course is to provide a knowledge foundation in wastewater collection and prepare the operator to write and pass the Level 1 or 2 Wastewater Collection Certification exam.

This 4.5 day course combines the introductory and second level water distribution disciplines, providing the basic knowledge and advanced appreciation of water distribution practices. Focusing on the practical aspects of construction, operation and maintenance of water distribution systems. Recommended for operators who maintain a facility classified as WD-I / II.
The course is followed by an EOCP examination for catagories such as Water Distribution OIT, Level 1 or 2.

This 5-day program covers aspects of cross connection controls and backflow preventer assembly testing as published in the AWWA Canadian Cross Connection Control 2007 Manual published by the Western Canada Section American Water Works Association (WCS AWWA) and is followed by the BCWWA Backflow Assembly Testers Certification. Agenda items include:
