The Small Water Systems course provides a working knowledge of water distribution and water treatment practices, focusing on the basic aspects of system construction, operations, and maintenance. This 2 day course will be of value to all operators of water distribution and/or water treatment systems, particularly those that serve a population of less than 500. Upon completion of the course, students will have satisfied the training requirements which, combined with appropriate experience, will make them eligible to write the Small Water Systems exam for the Environmental Operators Certification Program.

This course will be followed by an EOCP examination session at the end of the second day of the course.

** Note: Environmental Operator Certification Program Certification Exams require separate application online and are to be completed through the EOCP Customer Relationship Management System at https://crm.eocp.ca/  and to be submitted no later than 16 business days prior to the posted date of the scheduled exam.

This 5-day program covers aspects of cross connection controls and backflow preventer assembly testing as published in the AWWA Canadian Cross Connection Control 2007 Manual published by the Western Canada Section American Water Works Association (WCS AWWA) and is followed by the BCWWA Backflow Assembly Testers Certification. Course Overview

This one-day course provides the foundation needed to develop a source water protection plan for your water supply system.

You should take this course if you:

  • Are a small water system owner (including trustees and councilors), operator, water user, or community member interested in protecting the sources of your water supply system.
  • Want to earn CEU credits that can be applied to water or wastewater systems continuing education requirements.

The course is also applicable to larger water supply system owners, operators and users.

You will be asked to complete a knowledge assessment when you register to give the course facilitator an understanding of your acquired knowledge to date.

Learning Objectives

After completing the Source Water Protection course, you will be able to:

  • Create a source water protection plan, including understanding how to create a community planning team, build community support, delineate the source protection area, evaluate assessment tools, and develop and implement an action plan, including emergency response planning.
  • Understand how to use the various assessment tools, including the Source to Tap screening tools, Water Assessment Guide, and Well Protection Toolkit.

  • An operator in a water treatment or water distribution system, an operator in a wastewater treatment facility, or responsible for water or effluent quality.
  • Interested in moving into a laboratory testing role.
  • Preparing for a certification exam or want to earn CEU credits that can be applied to water or wastewater systems continuing education requirements.

Learning Objectives

After completing the Water Quality and Sampling for Water & Wastewater course, you will be able to:

  • Understand how sampling is used to monitor for compliance with regulations for drinking water and wastewater effluent.
  • Understand common sampling methods and procedures including grab samples, composite samples, and automatic sampler tools, and how to determine which procedure is appropriate based on the circumstance, including routine bacteriological sampling, full chemical analysis, sampling for THMs, influent sampling, primary clarifier sampling, mixed liquor sampling, and monitoring well sampling.
