Dam Safety Management in BC – Kamloops @ Coast Kamloops Hotel

Course Description:

The workshop is an active participation workshop focusing on how to safely manage a dam in accordance with regulatory requirements and best management practices. Content includes practical exercises and review of regulations and available resources.  Participants will receive a dam safety management system (DSMS) binder complete with templates and useful resources tailored for owners of small- to medium-sized dams.  Demonstration of how to implement the DSMS binder resources will be provided. Opportunity to provide workshop evaluation and feedback for future resource development will be given.

Operators attending this course will earn 0.6 CEUs and Core for WD, WT, and SWS.

2018 BCGWA Trade Show, Convention, and AGM

The 2018 BCGWA Trade Show, Convention, and AGM is coming to Langley!  Put us on your calendar now for April 4 and 5, at the Coast Langley  Hotel & Convention Center, 20393 Fraser Highway, Langley.

We are setting the stage for another successful event, featuring a two-day interactive 24-booth trade show, a full day well pump installer course, an opportunity to challenge the well pump installer ITA exam.  On Wednesday we’ll kick-off a “Hard Day’s Night” with Beatles tribute band, the Fab Fourever at our President’s Gala.

A variety of informative talks are planned on flowing artesian wells, groundwater regulations and  information resources in BC, and other topics of interest to industry practitioners.  We are excited to welcome Wally Wells, Executive Director of Asset Management BC, as our keynot speaker on Thursday.

Course Overview

This five-day course provides operators with the fundamental knowledge to be able to safely use and handle chlorine gas and hypochlorite solutions.

You should take this course if you:

  • Operate or maintain a facility that uses chlorine gas or hypochlorite solutions for disinfection purposes.
  • Want to earn CEU credits that can be applied to water or wastewater systems continuing education requirements.

You will be asked to complete a knowledge assessment when you register to give the course facilitator an understanding of your acquired knowledge to date.

Learning Objectives

Upon completing the Chlorine Handling course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the factors that can impact water quality, and the different methods that are used for disinfecting water, and their advantages and limitations, including filtration, aeration, UV disinfection, pH adjustment, and oxidants such as chlorine, chloramines and ozone.
  • Safely apply chlorination and hypochlorination methods in your facility, including controlling for gases and residual by-products.
  • Understand how to safely install, use, troubleshoot, and maintain equipment for chlorination and hypochlorination.
  • Calculate chlorine and hypochlorination dosages based on water distribution system demands and hydraulics.
  • Understand chlorine system design principles, including engineering controls, ventilation, alarm systems, and detection instruments.
  • Understand and apply chlorine safety practices, and prepare for emergency response.

Course Overview

This one-day course will enhance the operator’s knowledge about how to plan, implement, troubleshoot, and evaluate a Unidirectional Flushing Program, to achieve effective water flushing and enhance water quality within a distribution system.

You should take this course if you are:

  • An operator of a water distribution system.
  • Interested in a career as a water operator, or wanting to understand more about water distribution.
  • An operator who wishes to prepare for level 1 EOCP certification, or that wants to earn CEU credits that can be applied to water or wastewater systems continuing education requirements.

You will be asked to complete a knowledge assessment when you register to give the course facilitator an understanding of your acquired knowledge to date.

Learning Objectives

After completing the Unidirectional Flushing course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the purpose and benefits of unidirectional flushing, the role of flushing in maintaining water quality, the equipment used, and alternative methods for flushing.
  • Prepare a plan for a unidirectional flushing program that integrates water system maps, financial and staff resources, scheduling, equipment, community notification, evaluation, and computer modelling software.
  • Safely implement and troubleshoot unidirectional flushing procedures and calculate water flows and velocities.

Course Overview

Wastewater Treatment 1 is the first of three courses that make up the BCWWA Wastewater Treatment Program. This initial course introduces operators to key concepts in the field of wastewater treatment, and provides operators with the basic knowledge of wastewater treatment plant components and treatment methods used with varying degrees of complexity.

You should take this course if you are:

  • Wanting to understand more, or entering into a role where you will be dealing with the treatment of wastewater.
  • In a role that requires an understanding of how wastewater treatment processes work, or maintaining a facility classified as a wastewater treatment (WWT1) facility.
  • An operator who wishes to prepare for level 1 EOCP certification, or that wants to earn CEU credits that can be applied to water or wastewater systems continuing education requirements

Learning Objectives

Upon completing Wastewater Treatment 1, you will be able to:

  • Evaluate physical characteristics of a waste stream including colour, flow, odour, temperature, etc.
  • Perform related security, safety and administrative procedures involving chemical hazards, personal protective equipment, general health and safety procedures, and emergency preparedness.
  • Evaluate and maintain related equipment including preventative and corrective maintenance and equipment evaluation.
  • Operate equipment including hydraulics, pumps, valves, etc.
  • Understand how domestic water systems impact wastewater treatment.
  • Understand the metric system, measurements and solving equations.
